Some Considerations...

Shared Reflection

 Opening Prayer
This is my Song (Finlandia - Llyod Stone/Jean Sibelius)

Personal Reflection
Lesson(s) Learned
(Here you will take a moment to quitely reflect on a lesson or lessons learned this year and provide yourself with some positive advice for senior year.)

Closing Thoughts - Pope Francis
The need to make Solidarity the "default attitude"

From Week 1 of class blog:
One of my favorite quotes related to this subject matter is by Dr. King: I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. We must rapidly begin—we must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered. - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from “Beyond Vietnam” April 4,1967

Closing Prayer

O God of all beginnings and endings,
We praise and thank you for the gift of this school year.
It has been a time filled with grace and blessings,
With challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows.
The days have passed quickly, O Lord.
The weeks, the months, the seasons, the holidays and holy days,
The exams, vacations, breaks, and assemblies,
All have come forth from your hand.
While we trust that your purposes have always been at work each day,
Sometimes it has seemed difficult to understand and appreciate
Just what you have been up to in our school.
Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer.
Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit.
Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion,
And bless us, according to your will,
With the fulfillment of our summer hopes and dreams.
Watch over us in the weeks of rest ahead,
And guide each day as you have done this past year.
Help us return to school with a new spirit and a new energy.
May we continue to grow
In age, wisdom, knowledge and grace
All the days of our lives.

Pax et bonum!
Mr. Sims

Week 19 Final Assessment & Conclusion of Praxis Projects

Due to a family member's illness, I will be out of school Monday, May 22nd. Praxis Presentations will resume on Tuesday. Since we were scheduled for one final assessment, I decided to offer this article and completion of questions as the final assessment. Please follow the directions. This information will also be sent in an email.

This is the link to the article, The Need for a Planetary Ethic by Ervin Laszlo.
https://www.uibk.ac.at/peacestudies/downloads/peacelibrary/planetaryethic.pdf

The article, The Need for a Planetary Ethic by Dr. Ervin Laszlo, was published ten years ago, long before Pope Francis’ On Care for Our Common Home. It presents some valuable insights as well as some topics we touched upon in class.
I would like for you to read the article before entertaining any of the questions. After a first read, answer each question in a minimum of seven sentences. You may cite the article when needed. Be sure to use quotation marks. There are no page numbers to do an effective MLA citation. You may single space your responses.
Upon completion, save and send to my email via a Word document or Google document.
This assignment will take the place of your Tuesday CST test since we will use Tuesday to present Praxis projects.

Details:
  1. Read article
  2. Respond to questions in a minimum of seven (complete) sentences each. 12 point font, single space with heading. Title: The Need for A Planetary Ethic Responses
  3. Send via email Word document or Google document
  4. Due: Preferred to be completed in class. Due no later than Tuesday evening 11:59 p.m.
70 points

Questions (10 points each)

1.How does Dr. Laszlo define a planetary ethic? Why does the Union of Concerned Scientists state we urgently need one?

2. Why is classic liberalism’s (Bentham, Locke etc…) “Live and let live” approach no longer valid today? Why is this world view a serious risk?

3.How does Dr. Laszlo explain “Live in ways that enable others to live as well” in terms of how one pursues pleasures and achievements (status) in life?

4. By way of envisioning the consequences of one’s actions on the life of the planet, what does Dr. Laszlo say about eating meat?

5. By way of envisioning the consequences of one’s actions on the life of the planet, what does Dr. Laszlo say about smoking (tobacco)?

6.By way of envisioning the consequences of one’s actions on the life of the planet, what does Dr. Laszlo say about driving?

7.What are your thoughts (pro /con) on Dr. Ervin Laszlo’s ideas? Are there any connections to any of the themes of Catholic Social Teaching?

Week 16

During this week we will watch the movie Hidden Figures. Below is an outline and presentation of questions 1 & 2 serving as a means of how to present the questions your praxis group selected for: 1. unpacking Hidden Figures and; 2. connecting the theme or themes of the movie to our course text.

These are the questions: 1. Review the terms participation and marginalization (59 - 60). When Katherine first appears in her new workroom after leaving West Computing, she is mistaken for the custodian. What information does this brief but significant incident convey? How is she treated by her male co-workers? By Paul Stafford (Jim Parsons)?

2. Read pages 150 - 160. What is structural discrimination? How is Mary’s attempt to be a certified engineer and example of  this? Why does she still have to go to court to attend classes? Other examples in the film?

Here is the process for presenting your question. (Please note, since I am presenting two questions and offering a variety of approaches, the times for each section will be inflated.):
  •   Prayer and/or Journal activity - This can occur at the beginning or end  of your presentation - Be mindful of time 5 - 7 minutes
  • Short video from YouTube, ted.com etc..OR article OR activity that defines the topic and places it in a  contemporary context. Defining topic — Awareness 5 minutes
  • Discussion of the  question(s) and how it is related to film: Central Argument(s) — Analysis -  15 - 20 minutes - One person lead, but all can assist
  • Values learned -  Vales/Rights at Stake  — New Awareness - 5 - 7 minutes
1. Prayer/Journal Activity:
(Again, this can take place at the begiining or end of class. Be mindful of time)

Think of a time when you felt excluded. How did this make you feel?

2. Defining Topic - Awareness
Pease note: After video or article with some comments, you want to define the topic. Asking for reactions, is important. One can also begin with a question. For example, what are the types of ways we discriminate?

Article example - See handout. Pope Francis speaks to reporters on place

Defining participation, marginalization, and structural discrimination
REFER TO HANDOUT ON STRUCTURAL DISCRMINATION

3. Discussion - Analysis related to the previous step and the film.
Here is where one can make the connections to contemporary or historical examples that are also found in the film. (see quotes by Dr. King and Lou Gehrig below)

4. Values learned - New Awareness: See Catholic Social Teaching and Racism - I will refer to quote from the Catechsim of the Catholic Church. These values can be Catholic Social teaching themes, Mercy Core values, values noted in course text etc..

"If you act right, you are right." Dorothy Vaughan

At the conclusion, a challenge to the class may be, How might I (we) act differently?

See this example do Mercy Core values as written by a staff person working at a Mercy institution. Very insightful!

Introduction to the Harkness Method (Discussion Table) using key definiton from Chapter 2 and the Catholic Church's stance on immigration in the Diocese of Los Angels, California. Please have on hand your definitnions.
International affairs expert Fareed Zakaria has recently suggested that America’s edge in education comes from its habit of making students think rather than just memorize and regurgitate (191-195).  Discussion based teaching (also called the “Harkness method,” after the oval discussion tables designed to facilitate conversation) challenges students to sit at the center of education, making meaning of new information together, talking, listening, and ultimately thinking.

A church in Southern California is helping prepare families for potential encounters with immigration officials by teaching them their rights while encouraging them to respect laws. MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff reports for Sunday TODAY on the plan that an archbishop says even the Pope would like.
