Introduction to the Harkness Method (Discussion Table) using key definiton from Chapter 2 and the Catholic Church's stance on immigration in the Diocese of Los Angels, California. Please have on hand your definitnions.
International affairs expert Fareed Zakaria has recently suggested that America’s edge in education comes from its habit of making students think rather than just memorize and regurgitate (191-195).  Discussion based teaching (also called the “Harkness method,” after the oval discussion tables designed to facilitate conversation) challenges students to sit at the center of education, making meaning of new information together, talking, listening, and ultimately thinking.

A church in Southern California is helping prepare families for potential encounters with immigration officials by teaching them their rights while encouraging them to respect laws. MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff reports for Sunday TODAY on the plan that an archbishop says even the Pope would like.

Week 8 The Development of Catholic Social Teaching

During this short week we will explore the first part of Chapter 2. We will  not only define Catholic Social Teaching (see top  of page 45) but also explore its historical context beginning with Pope Leo XIII. For Wednesday: Have read up to page 49. Define these terms in your notes:
Catholic Social teaching, the Enlightenment, capitalism, socialism & communism.
 Be prepared to discuss #4 p. 49

Rerum Novarum
Rerum novarum (from its first two words, Latin for "of revolutionary change" [n 1]),
or Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor, is an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII
on 15 May 1891.

For Thursday, please read article for Colloquium (distributed in class) as well as this article
 found here:http://www.crs.org/stories/building-up-youth-and-communities-in-el-salvador

For Friday: Read pages 50 - 56. What are the six themes of Rerum Novarum (#5 , p 56)
Please offer an example for each and why they are relevant for today? Please complete
 this exercise in your notes.

Discussion of #4 p.49

What are the six themes of Rerum Novarum (#5 , p 56)
Please offer an example for each and why they are relevant for today?

Songs used for our class activity
Song 1- Capitalism
Money, Money, Money by the O'Jays (from Ohio but produced in Philadelphia)
You have heard the intro to this song , but have you ever listened to the lyrics?

Song 2 - Socialism
Dublin City 1913 by the Buskers
1916 is often mentioned as an important year in Irish history,
and it’s due to get a lot more attention with the centenary of the Easter Rising occurring next year.
However, just 3 years before that was another momentous time for Ireland that doesn’t often
get the recognition it deserves. It’s all to do with a man by the name of James Larkin
(or ‘Big Jim’ as he was commonly known), who fought for worker’s rights, introduced trade unionism to Ireland,
and generally made the country a better place in more ways than one.
Here’s what you need to know about 1913, the year of the now infamous ‘Lockout’.
Song 3 - Communism
Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine (RATM)
Lead guitarist , Tommy Morello identifies himself as a communist

Dismissal
Renegades Of Funk - Rage Against The Machine
